Yellow Room Learning (YRL) delivers information security awareness training that empowers employees with the knowledge to recognise and prevent cyber-attacks.
The company had recently decided to use Totara Learn as the solution to deliver training to their clients, as well as providing a separate instance of the LMS to their larger clients.
What were the reasons that you decided to have a theme created for your LMS site?
Ben: “Having a fully customised look was a key influencer in our decision to use Totara Learn, so we knew that this service was crucial for us. We needed the site to look unique to us, and make us stand out from the competition. We needed it to look great and be easy to use so that we could sell it to our prospective clients.”
What was your feature criteria for the new design?
Ben: “Aside from looking great, we needed it to be responsive. As we deliver training solutions for mobile workforces we also needed our Totara Learn site to look just as good on mobile phones.
As with any training platform, learner engagement is key. So the navigation had to be simple. We typically provide three different learning approaches for our 12 available topics, consisting of in-depth, microlearning and formative assessment approaches. Previously, listing all 36 courses in one place caused confusion and problematic navigation. So we needed something that would allow learners to find the right level of courses quickly.”
The HowToMoodle team listened carefully to Yellow Room Learning’s requirements and created three fresh concepts, which were then evolved into a single, final design.
Design Concept 1
Design Concept 2
Design Concept 3
To aid the clear navigation of Yellow Room Learning’s 36 courses, HowToMoodle created a graphical tiles feature within the theme design. This feature separated the three learning approaches clearly, allowing learners to instantly find the right level of courses.
HowToMoodle's Multi-T feature was also applied, allowing Yellow Room Learning to create a multi-tenancy effect on their site in which they can present different content and styling unqiue to the client that is logged in.
Since the theme launch, what has been the response by your colleagues and clients to your LMS site?
Ben: “We’re really pleased with the design. The fact that it is customised and unique to us is vital – and we can demonstrate a great looking platform, both on the desktop and mobile, to our clients.
Our clients have given us great feedback too on its ease of use and navigation.
If I could offer any advice to organisations in a similar position to us I would say to go for a custom theme – this sets you apart from your competitors.”
Commenting on working with HowToMoodle, Ben adds:
“From the first contact with HowToMoodle, everything was straightforward. The design team listened carefully to our requirements and the look and feel that we wanted, and they came back with the design straight away. In fact, there were no revisions to it – it was spot on first time which was great. Implementation was really straightforward.”
Why we love this theme:
We enjoyed creating and developing the theme design for Yellow Room Learning. The theme clearly makes the company stand out from the crowd, and the use of the tile feature has made a significant impact on the look of the site, ease of navigation and improved user engagement. The Multi-T feature has allowed them to display a personalised look with relevant content for each individual client.
We’re delighted that the company has given and received such great feedback following their theme creation and we wish them all the best with their continued success with Totara Learn.
